Ira May

Hi!

My name is Ira May and I wanted to be a nurse since I was 8. However, my choice of Midwifery as a profession has answered my youth’s question: Where the babies were born from?…Yes, Yes… exactly! Where the babies were born from I have learned at 18, doing 3 years study at Midwifery College! And since then I did not change my course in Midwifery being with women and their families in pregnancy, childbirth and portpartum.

My passion truly ignited in Saint Petersburg, Russia, following my return from a nursing-midwifery exchange program in the USA in 1996. Rather than pursuing marriage, I chose to dedicate myself to a four-year advanced nursing course at university. During that time, I also laid the groundwork for and began working at Russia’s first Centre for Continuity of Midwifery Care. After four years, the center achieved remarkable results, with caesarean section rates as low as 5-10%, no epidurals, and no forceps-assisted deliveries, setting a new standard for natural, patient-centered maternity care.

“How come?”- you might ask.

It is a well researched and known fact that Continuity of private Midwife Canberra Care improves labour and birth outcomes via mechanism of increased trust and stress reduction. However, to achieve even better outcomes takes more effort and time to invest.

I moved to Australia in 1999.

I finally got married, became a mother and Registered Nurse/Midwife!

Today Australian Midwife mostly has no chances to relax labouring woman with massage and aromatherapy due to ongoing detailed documentation. Back in Russia, I had chances to apply my CertificateIV Swedish Relaxation massage and aromatherapy skills in labour rooms.

It’s later in Australia I received upgrade of my CertificateIV to Remedial Massage Diploma via 2 years study at a private college in Canberra. I opened my Family Massage Therapies Samovar massage studio at the same time of Aquanatal Program commencement. I work with all body troubles and complexities, ages and genders. But my favourite clients are still “preggie bellies”!

Women learn about classes at the studio and about Remedial pregnancy massage enrolling into Aquanatal classes. It is a rare combination of skills ( Remedial Massage Canberra, Therapeutic Massage, Relaxation Massage, Pregnancy Massage, Pregnancy workout classes – Aquanatal instructor, Water aerobic activities and Nurse/Midwife) in one service provider and great opportunity to achieve pain-free well pregnancy and better  birth outcomes, exercising during pregnancy, specifically in water! Research has found that in addition to various amazing benefits (www.aquanatal.com.au) there is a great decrease of need in pain relief in labour! That alone makes me think that women who regularly exercised during pregnancy are more resilient physically and mentally to use  labour coping techniques to their greater advantage.
